Times by 10 and take one lot away: 9 × 7 is 70 − 7 = 63. The digits of every answer up to 9 × 10 add up to 9.

When it is learnt

Most children learn the 9 times table in Year 4. By the end of Year 4 they should know every table up to 12 × 12, and they take the multiplication tables check in June of Year 4.

Helping at home

  • Chant it forwards, then try it backwards from 9 × 12.
  • Mix the order up once the chant is secure: 9 × 7, 9 × 3, 9 × 9.
  • Turn each fact round: if 9 × 6 = 54, then 54 ÷ 9 = 6.
