A trick for the 3 times table
The digits of every answer in the 3 times table add up to 3, 6 or 9: 27 is 2 + 7 = 9.
When it is learnt
Most children learn the 3 times table in Year 3. By the end of Year 4 they should know every table up to 12 × 12, and they take the multiplication tables check in June of Year 4.
Helping at home
- Chant it forwards, then try it backwards from 3 × 12.
- Mix the order up once the chant is secure: 3 × 7, 3 × 3, 3 × 9.
- Turn each fact round: if 3 × 6 = 18, then 18 ÷ 3 = 6.
