A trick for the 8 times table

Double, double, double: 8 × 6 is double 6 (12), double again (24), and double again (48).

When it is learnt

Most children learn the 8 times table in Year 3. By the end of Year 4 they should know every table up to 12 × 12, and they take the multiplication tables check in June of Year 4.

Helping at home

  • Chant it forwards, then try it backwards from 8 × 12.
  • Mix the order up once the chant is secure: 8 × 7, 8 × 3, 8 × 9.
  • Turn each fact round: if 8 × 6 = 48, then 48 ÷ 8 = 6.
