What your child practises

  • Year 5find 50% and 10% of an amount
  • Year 5find 25%, 20% and 1% of an amount
  • Year 6find multiples of 10% and 5%
  • Year 6find any percentage by building from 10% and 5%
  • Year 6solve percentage-decrease problems (sale prices)

Mix-ups Noggli looks out for

  • Finds the discount but forgets to take it off the price

Building percentages from 10%

10% is the amount divided by 10. From there: 20% is double 10%, 5% is half of 10%, 1% is the amount divided by 100. So 65% of 340 is 6 lots of 10% (204) plus 5% (17), which is 221.

25% is a quarter and 50% is a half, which is often quicker than going through 10%.

Sale prices and percentage decrease

A £60 squishy with 20% off: 20% of £60 is £12, so the new price is £60 − £12 = £48. Year 6 questions often stop children after the first step, so Noggli checks for that.

Helping at home

  • Practise 10% of lots of numbers until it is quick: it is the key to everything else.
  • Look at real price tags when shopping and ask how much 10% or 25% off would save.
  • For sale questions, ask: is that the discount, or the new price?

Questions parents ask

How do you find a percentage of an amount?

Find 10% by dividing by 10, then build the percentage you need from 10%, 5% and 1%. For 30% of 40, 10% is 4, so 30% is 12.

What year do children learn percentages?

Percentages are introduced in Year 5, starting with 50%, 25%, 10% and 1%. Year 6 covers any percentage of an amount and simple percentage problems.

Why does my child give the discount instead of the sale price?

Finding 20% of £60 and stopping at £12 is a common slip. Noggli notices and asks your child what the shop would actually charge.
