Fractions, decimals and percentages practice
Fractions, decimals and percentages are three ways to write the same thing. Noggli practises converting between them, then putting a mixed set in order.
What your child practises
- Year 4know the decimal equivalents of 1/2, 1/4, 3/4 and tenths
- Year 5write tenths and hundredths as decimals
- Year 5convert between decimals and percentages
- Year 6write a fraction as a percentage
- Year 6compare fractions, decimals and percentages
Mix-ups Noggli looks out for
- Copies the digits of a fraction straight into a decimal or percentage
- Mixes up tenths and hundredths
- Multiplies or divides by 10 instead of 100 for percentages
The ones worth knowing by heart
1/2 = 0.5 = 50%. 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%. 3/4 = 0.75 = 75%. 1/10 = 0.1 = 10%. 1/5 = 0.2 = 20%. Most KS2 questions build on these.
Converting fractions to decimals
Make the denominator 10 or 100 if you can: 3/5 = 6/10 = 0.6, and 7/20 = 35/100 = 0.35. A percentage is just a number of hundredths, so 0.35 is 35%.
To compare 61%, 0.07 and 4/5, write them all the same way first: 0.61, 0.07 and 0.8. This is a Year 6 skill that turns up in SATs reasoning papers.
Helping at home
- Use money: 0.25 of a pound is 25p, which is a quarter of a pound.
- Watch for 0.5 and 0.05. Saying "five tenths" and "five hundredths" out loud helps.
- Put mixed sets on a number line from 0 to 1 to compare them.

Questions parents ask
How do you convert a fraction to a decimal?
Turn the fraction into tenths or hundredths if you can, then write it as a decimal: 3/5 = 6/10 = 0.6. For harder fractions you can divide the top by the bottom.
Why does my child write 1/4 as 1.4?
Copying the digits of a fraction into a decimal is a common slip. Noggli spots it and reminds your child that 1/4 means one out of four equal parts, which is 0.25.
When do children learn fractions, decimals and percentages?
Decimal equivalents of halves, quarters and tenths start in Year 4. Hundredths and percentages are Year 5, and converting and comparing all three is Year 6.
