Conjunctions and sentence practice
Conjunctions join ideas together. Noggli practises sentence types first, then co-ordinating conjunctions (and, but, so), subordinating ones (although, unless) and relative pronouns (who, which).
What your child practises
- Year 2statements, questions, commands and exclamations
- Year 3choose co-ordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, so, because)
- Year 4choose subordinating conjunctions (although, unless, while, when)
- Year 5choose relative pronouns (who, which, where, whose)
Choosing the right conjunction
Co-ordinating conjunctions join two equal ideas: it was cold, so we lit the fire. Subordinating conjunctions add a less important idea: take an umbrella in case it rains. Relative pronouns start a relative clause: the dentist who fixed my tooth was kind.
Helping at home
- Read the sentence with each option and ask which one makes sense.
- Use because, so and but to finish the same sentence starter three ways.
- Who is for people, which is for things, where is for places.
