Tenses practice, including the present perfect
Noggli practises verb tenses from regular past tense (planned) to irregular verbs (thought), telling past, present and future apart, and the present perfect (have seen).
What your child practises
- Year 2form the past tense of regular verbs
- Year 3use irregular past tense verbs
- Year 4tell past, present and future tense apart
- Year 5use the present perfect (has/have + past participle)
Mix-ups Noggli looks out for
- Adds -ed to irregular verbs (runned, goed)
Irregular past tense verbs
Most verbs add -ed for the past tense, sometimes with a doubled letter (plan, planned). Irregular verbs change instead: think becomes thought, run becomes ran. Adding -ed to these (thinked, runned) is a very common slip.
The present perfect
The present perfect uses has or have with a past participle: I have seen that film twice. It is for something that happened at an unspecified time or still matters now. It is taught in Year 5 and tested in the Year 6 grammar paper.
Helping at home
- Make a list of irregular verbs your child uses and say them in a sentence.
- Play "yesterday I...": take turns saying a past tense sentence.
- Compare I saw it and I have seen it, and talk about the difference.

A clue, not a cross
A wrong answer gets a clue and another go. A second miss shows how it works, step by step.
No clock
Nothing counts down. Confidence first, speed follows on its own.
The right level
After a few questions Noggli knows where your child is, and every question after that adapts.

Questions parents ask
What is the present perfect tense?
A tense made with has or have plus a past participle, such as she has finished or they have gone. It describes something done at an unspecified time before now.
Why does my child say runned or goed?
Adding -ed to irregular verbs is a normal stage of learning. Noggli spots it and shows the right form without making a fuss.
Which tenses are in the Year 6 SATs?
The grammar paper can include simple past and present, the progressive forms (was running, is running) and the present perfect.
