Spelling practice for Years 3 to 6
Noggli practises words from the Year 3 and 4 and Year 5 and 6 spelling lists. Your child picks the correct spelling from a few close tries, which trains the eye as well as the ear.
What your child practises
- Year 3spell words from the Year 3 and 4 list
- Year 4spell the harder Year 3 and 4 list words
- Year 5spell words from the Year 5 and 6 list
- Year 6spell the harder Year 5 and 6 list words
Mix-ups Noggli looks out for
- Spells a common word the way it sounds rather than the way it is written
The statutory spelling lists
The national curriculum lists 100 words children should spell by the end of Year 4 (such as centre, position and calendar) and another 100 by the end of Year 6 (such as definite, variety and necessary). Every word Noggli asks is from these two lists. They are tricky because they do not sound the way they are spelt.
Why pick-the-spelling works
Choosing between definite, definate and defenite makes your child look closely at the word. Wrong options are the real mistakes children make, so noticing them helps when writing too.
Helping at home
- Find the tricky part of the word and draw a box round it.
- Make up a silly saying: "necessary has one collar and two sleeves" (one c, two s).
- Look, say, cover, write, check, a few words at a time.
Made for children who worry about getting it wrong
A clue, not a cross
A wrong answer gets a clue and another go. A second miss shows how it works, step by step.
No clock
Nothing counts down. Confidence first, speed follows on its own.
The right level
After a few questions Noggli knows where your child is, and every question after that adapts.
