Ratio and proportion practice

Ratio compares amounts, like 3 pink squishies for every 2 blue ones. Noggli practises scaling, for-every problems and sharing an amount in a ratio.

What your child practises

  • Year 6scale a quantity by a whole number
  • Year 6solve for-every problems (3 pink for every 2 blue)
  • Year 6share an amount in a ratio 1:n
  • Year 6share an amount in a ratio a:b

Mix-ups Noggli looks out for

  • Divides by one side of the ratio instead of the total number of parts

Sharing in a ratio

To share 42 in the ratio 3:4, add the parts (3 + 4 = 7), find one part (42 ÷ 7 = 6), then multiply: 3 × 6 = 18 and 4 × 6 = 24. The common slip is dividing by 3 or 4 instead of 7.

Scaling and for-every problems

If 4 squishies need 20 beads, 20 squishies need 5 times as many: 100 beads. For every 4 pink there are 2 blue, so 32 pink means 16 blue. Ratio is a Year 6 topic and appears in SATs reasoning papers.

Helping at home

  • Draw the parts as boxes: three boxes for pink, four for blue.
  • Cook together and scale a recipe up or down.
  • Always find the total number of parts first when sharing.

Questions parents ask

How do you share an amount in a ratio?

Add the parts of the ratio to find the total number of parts, divide the amount by that total to find one part, then multiply by each side of the ratio.

When is ratio taught?

Ratio and proportion is a Year 6 topic in the national curriculum.

What is the most common ratio mistake?

Dividing by one side of the ratio instead of the total number of parts. Noggli spots it and shows the boxes method.
