Place value and rounding practice

Place value is knowing what each digit is worth, and rounding uses it to simplify numbers. Noggli practises both, from three-digit numbers up to millions and decimals.

What your child practises

  • Year 3recognise the value of each digit in a three-digit number
  • Year 4round any number to the nearest 10 or 100
  • Year 5read place value to a million and round to the nearest 1,000
  • Year 5round decimals to the nearest whole number or one decimal place
  • Year 6round any whole number to a required degree of accuracy

Mix-ups Noggli looks out for

  • Gives the digit itself, not what it is worth in its column
  • Rounds the wrong way

What each digit is worth

In 85,279 the 2 is worth 200, because it is in the hundreds column. Saying the value, not the digit, is the skill. Noggli asks what a digit is worth so this becomes automatic.

Rounding numbers

Look at the digit to the right of the place you are rounding to. If it is 5 or more, round up; if it is 4 or less, round down. 369 to the nearest 10 is 370. 5.16 to one decimal place is 5.2.

Helping at home

  • Use a place value chart and move digits along it when multiplying by 10.
  • Round prices in the shop to estimate the total.
  • For rounding, find the two numbers it sits between first, then decide which is nearer.

Made for children who worry about getting it wrong

A clue, not a cross

A wrong answer gets a clue and another go. A second miss shows how it works, step by step.

No clock

Nothing counts down. Confidence first, speed follows on its own.

The right level

After a few questions Noggli knows where your child is, and every question after that adapts.

Questions parents ask

How do you round to the nearest 10?

When do children learn rounding?
