What your child practises

  • Year 3divide using the 2, 5 and 10 times tables
  • Year 3divide using the 3, 4 and 8 times tables
  • Year 4divide using tables up to 12
  • Year 5divide a two-digit number by a one-digit number
  • Year 6divide by a two-digit number

From tables to short division

If 6 × 3 = 18, then 18 ÷ 3 = 6. Children use table facts to divide in Years 3 and 4, then use short division (the bus stop method) for a two-digit or bigger number divided by one digit in Year 5.

Dividing by two-digit numbers

Year 6 children divide by numbers like 24 or 15, using long or short division. 720 ÷ 24 = 30, because 24 × 3 = 72. Knowing the tables well makes every step quicker.

Helping at home

  • Practise each times table as division facts too: 56 ÷ 8, 56 ÷ 7.
  • Check by multiplying back: if 720 ÷ 24 = 30, then 30 × 24 should be 720.
  • Use sharing with real objects for the early facts.

Questions parents ask

What is short division?

Short division, often called the bus stop method, divides a number by a single digit one place value column at a time, carrying any remainder into the next column.

When do children learn division?

Sharing and grouping start in Year 2. Division facts from the tables are Years 3 and 4, short division is Year 5, and dividing by two-digit numbers is Year 6.

How can I help my child with division?

Times tables are the biggest help. Noggli practises tables and division together, and gives a clue that links back to the table fact when your child is stuck.
